Some New Very Cool Turntables and Plinths
« on: December 20, 2009, 04:55:29 PM »
Just to alert those who might be interested, we have put up some of the new custom OMA plinths on this page over at the Products section of the OMA website-

http://www.oswaldsmillaudio.com/Products/plinths-Others.html

One is a takeoff on the Teres, though it bears no resemblance to any Teres I know of. The client came to us and worked with me to achieve what he wanted, which involved being able to mount his Kuzma Airline arm, as well as being able to experiment with other motors besides the Teres Maxon, and even being able to use a Technics SP 10 with a changeout of one piece of slate. I think it came out very well, visually. Waiting for a report on the sonics.

The other deck is just so incredibly cool looking, I don't even care how it sounds, though I am sure it will be super, as it was made by Fairchild, which you could call the US Neumann, with an enormous 16" damped platter that weighs nearly 30 pounds, an excellent, huge bearing, and an equally huge motor. Likewise, this deck's owner still has not weighed in with a report, but I am sure he will.

A Platine Verdier in slate will be next- it's actually finished but I had no time to assemble before leaving for the holidays. And there is also my own Commonwealth, which now has a slate plinth but still needs a power supply for the 50hz motor. The new Technics SP10 system will be ready to roll out in late January.

I have one of those original Fairchild turntable with the massive 16in. heavy platter. I bought it in 1995 or 1996 with a SME 3012 S2 tonearm and a Decca Super Gold cartridge in it. I took the platter and the bearing housing out of the original plinth and made my own plinth. I'm using a SME 3012 S2 tonearm/Denon DL-103 with it and it does sound very nice. I was using a Micro Seiki 3000 series stand alone motor to drive it. The bearing shaft is thick and is similar in diameter as the one in my EMT 930st. The platter spins smoothly and very stable.

I like the Teres.  This is definitely a fresh take on the rigid belt drive idea.  Kind of Micro-Seiki inspired yet not a copy.  The Kuzma tangential arm must take it to a new level.  Very classy.

Last night I was watching a PBS program regarding Marvin Gaye and the history or Motown Music. In one of the clip, I saw two Fairchild 16in. platter consoles running side by side inside the Motown recording studio. Very interesting.

I wasn't going to show this until it was all done, but.... here's an in progress picture of that Fairchild..... Slate, bamboo, and steel.
Oh yeah, it sounds pretty good too.  Thank you Jonathan!
